How to Write a Privacy Policy for a Mobile App

· Reuben Richard Lancer

Mobile apps often collect more types of data than websites. Here’s what you need to know when creating a privacy policy for your app.

App Store Requirements

Both Apple App Store and Google Play Store require apps to have a privacy policy if they collect data.

  • Apple: Requires a link to your privacy policy during app submission
  • Google: Requires a Privacy Policy link in your store listing and within the app

Common Data Types in Mobile Apps

Mobile apps typically collect:

  1. Device identifiers — IDFA, Android Advertising ID
  2. Location data — GPS, coarse location
  3. Contacts and media — with user permission
  4. Analytics — usage patterns, crash reports
  5. Push notification tokens — for messaging
  6. Payment data — via in-app purchases or SDKs

Third-Party SDKs

Most apps integrate SDKs that process data:

  • Analytics: Firebase, Mixpanel, Amplitude
  • Crash reporting: Sentry, Crashlytics
  • Advertising: AdMob, Unity Ads
  • Payments: RevenueCat, Stripe
  • Social: Facebook SDK, Google Sign-In

Each SDK’s data handling must be disclosed in your policy.

Mobile-Specific Considerations

  • Transparency: Describe data collection upfront with a consent dialog
  • Permissions: Explain why you need each permission at time of request
  • Data retention: Device data may persist even after app deletion
  • Children: COPPA applies if your app targets children under 13
